"When I first suggested forming the IWRP series of workshops the suggestion was based on the success of IWSA (international Workshop on Seismic Anisotropy) series of workshops and the comment made by Leon Thomsen at 8IWSA** that “The anisotropic community is highly informal, with no society, no office, no officers, no staff, and no journal. And so, every time we meet, it is the last time. But each time we meet, on the Friday, a miracle happens: somebody volunteers to organize the next meeting, two years later.” This seemed to me to be an excellent model for IWRP. **The Eighth International Workshop on Seismic Anisotropy (8IWSA) was held on April 20-24, 1998, in Boussens, France, at the CISFAB Training Center of Elf Aquitaine. This conference, held every two years since 1984, brings together many of the world's experts on seismic anisotropy for a week of intense discussion of recent advances.
